Applicant Portal Update

Staffing Talk

Applicant Portal quickly became a key part of our staffing software suite when we introduced it a few years back. The ability to both use it as an in-house kiosk and an internet application has made it a dual purpose time-saver and critical for the increasingly tight labor market. This summer we did a major upgrade, to version 2.0, and a lot of the work was done by an intern developer, Laura Stoerzinger, whom I've actually known since she was in kindergarten.

Croatia: Land of Open Software

Staffing Talk

Croatia is doing well since the Yugoslavia breakup in 1991. They are looking to keep things efficent and open. "Open Source, Open Society" and tall blonds according to this thread. Relevance to staffing software: new players can make a move that others can't. If I were starting from scratch I might consider writing in LAMP or some open source platform, but now I have a large installed base on Microsoft and the staffing market here wouldn't tolerate a step back in functionality to go open source.

Joel Spolsky On Software

Staffing Talk

Joel keeps one of the most respected blogs on software development. He runs an intense little software shop in New York, and in this recent post he writes about how he manages. He claims quite a retention rate - that no one never leaves. Is that always good? I'm not so sure, but I do have to respect how much care he puts into making newcomers feel welcome - Yankee games, Broadway Shows, lunches.

David Maister Blog

Management guru David Maister has taught me a lot about leverage and strategy. His book, Managing the Professional Services Firm , had a lot of influence on how I set up and run Tempworks. He preaches a convincing case for internal staff development, and you can see the results on display at Tempworks where almost all of our senior staff came up through the ranks from entry level positions.

Product Renewal Makes Good Business Sense

Staffing Talk

Businesses often fail to improve their traditional products to their own detriment. The passion gets diverted solely to new products, and the result is often reduced profit and neglect of traditional customers. You can see how this has played out in the car industry as Toyota constantly enhanced its brands while GM let its Impala brand languish with the result that Toyota is making money and close to taking over the #1 spot while GM is out looking for a savior buyer.

A Software Company to Admire

Staffing Talk

Epic Systems , an employee owned software company based in Madison, WI, has been taking the enterprise software market for hospitals by storm. You can read more about them at HISTALK , one of my favorite blogs and perhaps the most popular blog on the hospital industry itself. One of the cool things about Epic's approach to the market is that unlike Cerner and GE and other mega-companies that rely on Big Six consulting to get implementations done, Epic gets customers to take ownership of implemen

Paradigm Paralysis in HR Technology

Staffing Talk

Dr. John Sullivan writes some great essays on HR like this one at www.ere.net. I do have a couple criticism of his essay despite it being as usual a great piece of writing. First, he uses 'staffing business' as a close synonym for HR, which is very wrong in general and very wrong when it comes to discussion about technology. Second, he underplays the importance of payroll (the most interesting part of HR for employees.it is after all what they need to pay the rent).
