Microsoft Says Tech Talent Shortage Is Close To Crisis

Staffing Talk

The United States faces a growing economic challenge – a substantial and increasing shortage of individuals with the skills needed to fill the jobs the private sector is creating. The country faces the paradox of a crisis in unemployment at the same time that many companies cannot fill the jobs they have to offer. But these problems are not unrelated.

It should be simple. Now it’s Workable.

Workable

Here’s a challenge: walk around a contemporary office and spot the one thing that dates back to the fifties. It’s the resumé. If it’s not sitting in a stack of papers with hundreds of its friends, it’s in your email, dutifully converted in PDF, preserving the unstructured form of its paper ancestors. Hard to decipher, even harder to compare with other resumés, each carrying the stylistic creativity of its author.

Do Recruiters Have An Image Problem?

Staffing Talk

No, I do not believe all recruiters suck and are liars , as someone from Chicago penned on an Indeed. com career forum right before I wrote this post. But after just speaking to a networking group consisting of mostly unemployed people about how to do a better job of presenting – and telling – their own stories, I am convinced recruiters don’t have the greatest reputation.

New Fronts in the War for Talent

Staffing Talk

I’ve never liked the expression ‘war for talent’ a whole lot. It gives the idea that the war is solely about different parties with capital fighting each other for the limited supply of talent. As recruiters, we like that view of the war since we get paid some of that capital to help one party win talent from another, but like most wars there are many fronts besides the one we see.

Can Staffing Software Survive Twitter’s Changing APIs

Staffing Talk

To be fair, Twitter never promised me or anyone that I’m aware of that it wouldn’t go changing its API more often than a football fan changes his fantasy roster. But they do, and that creates problems for software developers. How are we to keep up? And it’s not just mature software systems that struggle with the change, startups do too. A while back I wrote about a staffing industry startup that was not just leveraging Twitter but actually using it as its sole platform.

Are CEOs Paid Too Much?

Staffing Talk

There is a lot of banter out there about CEO salaries and how they are paid too much. The argument goes that the system isn’t fair and that the market is rigged such that the CEO unduly influences the very board that is supposed to manage him or her. A different view holds that the high pay of the CEO creates a heated competition among the lower ranks to be next in line, thus producing high performing junior and senior executives.
