Staffing Talk

Marx seemed dead for a decade or so, but here's an Argentinan political operative opining that temporary agencies and Manpower in particular exploit the proletariat for the benefit of the bourgeoisie. And imagine, those evil staffing companies are trying to make a profit too! "A cambio de estos servicios prestados a otros capitalistas, las agencias de empleo reciben una parte de la plusvalía que estos últimos extraen a sus obreros.

Urge to Serve Should Override Urge to Create

Staffing Talk

At TempWorks, we regularly get what we call "internet leads". They come as inbound email messages, phone calls and web registrations from aspiring staffing professionals launching a staffing company. I like to get on the line with these guys (and gals) and try to get inside their entrepreneurial brains, as there's nothing like the excitement of someone starting up a company.

Not Your Father's Candidate Portal

Staffing Talk

Today, nearly every recruitment-related company vaunts some kind of online recruitment presence dubbed 'candidate portal'. This term has become so over-used and to mean so many things that it has become meaningless. Some companies use the term 'candidate portal' to refer to a generic website. This often amounts to little more than an html page with a company name and logo.

Time to Discredit the WPF Naysayers

Staffing Talk

Great is not the enemy of good. I don't like to spend a lot of time discrediting competitors, but I'll make an exception here because of the PR traction one has gotten with a well-written (but faulty) blog post that criticized WPF. Briefly, WPF encompasses Microsoft's next generation Windows platform, which Tempworks uses for its Enterprise product line.

The other day, after spending approximately 15 minutes struggling with a simple update to Google's rain-making Adwords Software, I had one of my web-guru programmers come over to help. This is a guy who develops and works with web software all day long and has an ear ring. You get the idea - he has all of the other requirements for cracking any hard-to-use website out there and, granted, he did just that.

The Candidate Shortage Lie

Staffing Talk

It seems that you can't pick up an HR publication without reading something about the so-called 'candidate shortage'. Key employee leaves: candidate shortage. Restaurant short on help: candidate shortage. Staffing company can't fill job order: candidate shortage. And so on. The reality is that no free market has a shortage of anything. The laws of supply and demand do not stop applying simply because we are dealing with people.
