Over the past month, I had the privilege of being the Forum One Project Manager for a fun, open-source web application development contest: the Apps for America 2: Data.gov Challenge. In celebration of the release of Data.gov, the Sunlight Foundation sponsored this coding showdown that asked entrants to make a useful web or iPhone application using at least one data feed from the new Data.gov site.

Some including my dear brother Doug in Sacramento are wondering why I haven’t released the source code yet to the advertised open-source career website I’ve been developing. Doug further wonders why it isn’t in SourceForge, a popular source code site for LAMP developers. Truth is I haven’t had anything worth releasing before now and secondly I have never used SourceForge and find it easier just to provide my stuff via a zip download.

Forum One recently supported a groundbreaking, education summit in New Mexico: "Unleashing Knowledge and Innovation for the Next Generation of Learning", convened by the Stupski Foundation , West Wind Education Policy , and the Knowledge Alliance. My colleague Colleen and I spent weeks working closely with the three convening organizations, helping them identify key ways to share their messages and summit activities in a virtual space.

We have seen in recent years a growing prevalence of online contests. Here are three recent contest efforts that have impressed us. First, the Netflix Prize is an outstanding, $1 million effort to improve Netflix' algorithm at recommending movies. Top tier researchers participated, eventually combining into a number of global teams. The final winner will soon be announced in a nail-biter end to the contest.

It took my wife being gone for 10 days this summer for me to realize that my youngest kids aren’t babies anymore. Nope they found the Ramen and frozen pizza all by themselves, and other than fights over MY Kindle , golf outings, bike rides to Buffalo Wings and the occasional need to wipe a counter or two, I had fleeting symptoms of empty nest syndrome.

It’s tough keeping up with the high-octane developers at Tempworks. For years we’ve had a direct hire fee schedule that automatically made sure that the back office processed placement fees, but I had no idea that Jathan Moline made it accommodate the increasingly complex schedule of those fees. You can blame it on the economy or simply the desire to please the client, but placement fees aren’t 100% up-front, no-guarantee deals these days.

One cool thing of having a great platform partner like Microsoft is that we see our products enhanced because they are busy making their products better. The Bing mapping service, Virtual Earth, is one such animal. We integrated into Tempworks sometime back but it just gets better and better.

Since launching Tempworks Freemium in May, I’ve been forcing my way through Chris Anderson’s philosophic Free: The Future of a Radical Price (available free on the Kindle ) which Malcolm Gladwell ripped apart in this also-free New Yorker article a few weeks back. I find both authors a bit ethereal for my interest at least as to how ‘free’ applies to enterprise software.

Instead of me selling to them, everyone was trying to sell to me including a really bright programmer who offered his services for a grand total of $1/hr. Fast-forward 16 years and a quick look at my marketing data shows that not only has India entered the online world but its activity dwarfs that of West Europe and Australia combined.

I'm very excited that our Datamasher web site is one of the three finalists in the Sunlight Foundation's " Apps for America 2 " Contest! The other two finalists are very interesting sites, but here are my thoughts on why Datamasher is very cool and deserving of your vote! by September 7th. So, in brief, what is Datamasher ?
