I recently was able to spend an amazing evening enjoying one of my new fave artists, Habib Koité and his band Bamada , based in Mali. You likely do not read this blog for its concert reviews (and if you do, you have likely been pretty frustrated to date), so, other than to say it was a fantastic show, I want to focus on two web management principles that struck me while taking in the African grooves.

One of the contradictions in life that I haven’t quite reconciled myself to is that the whacko left publications like the New Yorker and New York Times offer the best business reporting and comic relief anywhere. I hope you enjoy the comic below from a recent issue. If you’re a business news junkie like me and happen to pick up an issue of the New Yorker, be sure to read the ‘Business Page’ that comes right after their editorial section.

I literally just rolled off the red-eye back from the 2009 Non Profit Technology Conference (NTC '09), and although I'm exhausted - both physically and mentally - I'm hopeful and excited about everything I heard and saw. This year I was fortunate enough to play a very active role at the conference. On Sunday I hosted a Flickr Bootcamp, where I worked with non profit, "accidental techies," and helped them learn about better online photo sharing techniques.

My head is spinning from a rapid infusion of knowledge gleaned from three days at the 2009 Nonprofit Technology Conference in San Francisco. (My head is also spinning a bit from my arrival this morning on a redeye). Several of us from Forum One spoke at the conference, and we'll share more about our sessions over the next few days. The World Bank and the BBC are running a live debate online and offline tomorrow, April 23 on the global economic recession. (FYI - The online component of the debate is using Forum One's very cool Live Interviews Online service.). I like how the Bank is combining the Live Interviews Online with the face-to-face event and also YouTube video questions.

Nothing gives me more joy or hope than when I find someone who acts out of principle as opposed to self-interest. This is true of my good friend, Turkish historian Taner Akcam, whose books you can buy here. Same goes for these brave souls who risk their lives on a daily basis by speaking out under Turkey’s oppressive (it’s illegal to speak of the Armenian genocide in Turkey) and racist deep state.

What is it that Hubspot has against trade show marketing? I just love exhibiting at trade shows. No other opportunity allows me to exercise my gastrocnemius and soleus quite like standing in a booth all day. No pain, no gain I say. And then there is that once a quarter opportunity to pay union workers to set up the booth and tear it down. A great opportunity to support the job economy!

One thing clear from my jobs tour out East last week is that business owners don’t trust the Obama situation. They see handouts and higher taxes but no visibility of a long-term healthy economy. The result has been massive avoidance of new projects and spending slowdown on employment all around. You can see the real-time progression on Slate here.

So after bragging to the wife about New York restaurants, I got the mandate to find something great here in Twin Cities to take her to, and that made Meritage an obvious choice. I had the prix fixe menu (canard on a bed of couscous) and she had the foie gras stuffed lapin. Excellent. Meritage has their marketing and pricing figured out. “Recession inspired wine pricing.” $5/glass.

Geisha Restaurant, New York City While in New York we had the pleasure of meeting up with Brett Pogany of Stifel at Geisha’s Japanese restaurant off of Central Park. While not expensive by New York standards, Geisha reminded me of the nicer restaurants I enjoyed while working in Japan in the 1990s. It also reminded me of how gastronomically poor we are back here in Minnesota.

Cost reduction was a major topic of conversation at every stop on my client and prospect trip this last week, and so I get outright evangelistic about getting 100% rid of EVERY scrap of paper including paper checks. It only makes sense that getting rid of the paper means less handling, less postage, and less cost, but I didn’t realize how much until I got back home and read this post by Kevin Prow , Operations Manager at Tempworks.

When Tocqueville passed through this part of Indiana some 200 years ago he had a lot to say about slavery and the economy with equal measures of disgust and delight. His mood would be similar today. "Unemployment here is 15%," says the concierge at our hotel. "Obama came through three weeks ago, didn't you read about it." No, sorry, Mr-Spend-More-Than-Bush does not interest me I want to say.

My client AM-PM staffing in Louisiana puts out a great newsletter and has moved to a largely paperless, web-based time and attendance system. Last year I wrote about their original building out behind the one pictured here in what I can only imagine is a rare snow storm down there. The old building was constructed in the 1890s and I’m guessing it is one of the oldest still-standing staffing offices in the country.

This week I’m heading out on a customer visit and prospect sales trip to New York by car. Roughed out schedule is Wisconsin on Monday, Ohio on Wednesday and New York on Friday. I will try to meet up with anyone along the way – competitor, customers, prospect, coder - that wants to talk staffing and especially my favorite topics: paperless staffing, inbound marketing and lead generation, job boards, content management systems, golf, AJAX and.Net 4.0.

After we went up on our new website a month or so back I got a lot of compliments overall but also complaints about the navigation menus which didn’t work well under certain browsers and looked so 1997 on all browsers. So I started looking around at major websites and found that their menus weren’t much better. Take IBM’s pictured below. The only thing nice I can say about IBM’s website menus is that they suck less than their annoyingly repetitive and unimaginative commercials during the Master’

Matt is the designer at Wooly Mammoth Design who redid the design of our Tempworks website and this blog. The project involved both the design and implemention using the Umbraco content management system. I’m getting compliments from many people about his work and couldn’t be happier with the impact the new site has had on business development. Tempworks achieved yesterday an incredible milestone: 15 staffing software and funding leads that came in through our website in a single day. I want to recognize Clint Danks of ThinkSEM and credit him for the accomplishment. Clint has been my mentor and consultant during the past few months and patiently kept me on track as we migrated our website from an antiquated kludge to a modern content management system.

Most blogs out there never get out of the starting gate no less page rank two, so I was amazed to see Tempworks’ very own Cory Hintz have his blog hit a page rank of three during its first year. Page rank is a measure of a web page’s popularity. One reason his blog rose so fast is because of Cory’s tenacious networking. He’s not just tooting the Tempworks horn as he does in this post about customer accolades or this one about wins over ADP.

This is a follow up post to my recent admonition about being careful in hiring link-building services. No sooner had I wrote that post that I noticed a competitor perhaps unwittingly engaging in “black-hat” link-building. “Black-hat” refers to sneaky activities meant to fool the search engines and can include anything from hyperlink-filled spam comments on blogs to hidden text on a web page.
