How I Failed My Way to Success in Direct Marketing

Staffing Talk

One day soon after he opened his Manpower franchise in 1974, Dad told me to get a direct mail program going. Manpower had just come out with a little brochure that was a thin reprint of an add they had placed in Time Magazine, and it looked like a pretty good thing to use but I had no idea how. Do I put in in an envelope? Or could I just affix an address label.

A Monster Mess

Staffing Talk

I never took to Monster's job board with its awkward, multi-page intake process, yet the talk continues of a possible buyout above its current three-times-revenue market cap. Perhaps its international plays are making up for its crash here in the U.S. On the other hand, Socalkidinboston plays down the buyout options: 1. Google - do they really want bloated technology with a book of business that doesn't fit any of their models?

Human Capital Newsletter Recommendation

Staffing Talk

I've been following Brett Pogany and the human capital oriented finance newsletter his company, Stifel, Nicolaus and Company , puts out. Here's a blurb from their recent hold recommendation on Monster: We remain cautious on all our Human Capital Solutions stocks, including Monster. While growth in international markets continued to offset U.S. weakness in 1Q08, we believe signs of slowing in key European markets, including France and the U.K., have the potential to gain momentum as European tren

Love Letter, from Taleo?

Staffing Talk

Last night I received a will-self-destruct email from someone apparently upset with my critique of Taleo's buyout of Vurv. Perhaps it was from Taleo itself; perhaps it was from a competitor who wanted to make it seem like Taleo was acting insecure. Whatever.cute site www.willselfdestruct.com , but why not just post an anonymous comment though? The email pointed out that Taleo's cash position was $90+ million.

Get Thankful for a Competitor Talking Dirt

Staffing Talk

This post is about how to respond to a competitor that talks dirt about you in the marketplace, but before I get to that let me say that our primary competitors in staffing software - the top four or five - are by and large a good bunch of people. They are not perfect, and neither are we. But they largely operate on a high playing field. They're ethical, client-focused organizations, and in a referential market like ours they wouldn't succeed if they weren't.

UK Recruitment Podcast Site

Staffing Talk

I've been up listening to Julian Stopp's BornPodCast.Com. He conducts interviews with UK players in the online recruitment space like Tim Elkington at Enhance Media, Jonathan Turpin at Key103Jobs and Luke Collier at JumpToJobs. I especially like this clip on why job boards are failing SMEs (small to medium sized organizations). You don't hear much good about public job boards these days - lots of traffic maybe but really expensive and poor at getting candidates in the door.
