I want to tell you about a fantastic new (and developing) resource for congressional staff. Back in September, Forum One was one of the sponsors of CongressCamp, an informal "barcamp" unconference here in Washington. For two days, attendees exchanged ideas on how social media and collaboration tools could increase citizen engagement with Capitol Hill.

[link] In this alleged scam , an Illinois business defrauded employees and vendors alike, including at least two staffing companies, one of which took the high road in his comments: “I’m a big guy. I’ve been around the block,” said Val Shebeko, a partner in A+ Staffing. “If we get our money back, that would be terrific. But we can’t allow this kind of behavior in our local community, because most business that gets transacted around here is done on open terms.

[link] At Tempworks we get to talk to not a small number of consulting firms, job shops and government-financed job centers, so we get to see that yes there are some jobs that have been “created” by the “stimulus”. But what I mostly see in those jobs is money taken out of one pocket - the taxpayer’s - and put in another. The next result is of course that no jobs are created.

This week I had a chance to grab a coffee with Tempworks web developer and implementer, Brandon Johnson, who just returned from his trip to a remote village of Peru. After a multi-leg flight to Iquitos and an eight hour boat ride along some river that hooks up with Amazon, Brandon got to meet the locals including the village chain saw guy who, according to Brandon, could fell 10 bloodwood trees, slice them up like a saw mill, and turn them into construction ready planks - all in a single day.

Yesterday investors hammered Adecco’s stock for wild spending, an event that didn’t go unnoticed by its creditor’s (FT subscription required; hat tip: Mike Dourgarian) who called into question Adecco’s long-term liquidity. Adecco dropped another several percent subsequent to my post , making the sum total rout of investor wealth $900+ million (from 36.50 to 33.30 EUR or almost 10% on a market cap of $10 billion).

When a financial analyst called me at the beginning of September, I gave him my take that employment was still in the tank, that the tiny uptick counted little compared to the infernal descent that began October 2008. Indeed, the rise seemed no higher than Balloon Boy in the attic. Now six weeks later, it’s a different story. And it’s not just the normal October lift you usually get in the staffing industry.

My buddy and social media guru Ward Tongen chastised me today at the Unsummit in Minneapolis for talking up Twitter as the rage of the day. It’s not that he’s against Twitter – he’s quite active himself there. It’s simply that he sees Twitter much like Facebook and Yammer and others as a tool, a flavor-du-jour of micro-blogging. Twitter, um I mean micro-blogging, is taking off as the networking platform of choice for recruiters.

Bad hiring managers make life difficult for everyone. They rush about in a dither, complaining about the lack of resources, but fail to return phone calls or follow up on great candidates. They’re like the jerks that drive slowly in the left lane of the freeway who suddenly speed up when a new lane opens. They just don’t know how to work with other people.

Hat tip to the Staffing Robot for this story: According to an article by Staffing Industry Analysts , another heathcare VMS provider (vendor management system) has stiffed its medical staffing suppliers. Although not quite as lurid as the Chimes debacle in which unescrowed payment due to staffing companies were squandered in wild living , “misuse of funds” by an investment fund led to cash-flow problems at its subsidiary, a funding company.
