The candidate shortage is well documented. The follow-on effects of changing candidate behaviour, ghosting and counteroffers are almost universal, and I have addressed them several times. You are facing it too, every day. Recruiters must change their inputs if they want to change the outputs. That means doubling down on questioning, relationship-building, avoiding assumptions and […].

In 2020, the disruption and changes organizations faced forced many businesses to make quick changes to processes. Companies implemented work-from-anywhere or remote work policies, performance management practices were reformed, and technology played an even more critical role in the success of teams. HR leaders placed a larger emphasis on employee mental health and well-being, and many workers shifted toward a purpose-driven approach to work.
A few weeks ago, a startling article from the New York Times showed that almost 1 million mothers have left the workforce. Before the pandemic, more women were employed than men for the first time ever. Today, we’re back down to 1980s levels of women in the labor force. These grim statistics have caused some people to begin to refer to the current recession as the shecession (short for “she-recession”) because of the unequal impact it has had on women.
As our workforce evolves, so must the way we support it. With more employees choosing to work beyond age 65, HR leaders are increasingly being called upon to guide aging employees through one of the most complex transitions in their professional lives - from employer sponsored plans to Group Medicare. Without clear guidance, confusion around eligibility, coverage options, and cost implications can lead to uncertainty and missed opportunities for optimized benefits.
High-volume hiring comes with its own unique set of challenges. Throw in a global pandemic? You've magnified your hurdles. In a recent survey of 420 recruiting professionals at the talent acquisition director level or above, 65 percent said they have "high volume hiring demands, defined in the study as needing to fill over 1,000 positions in a short period of time or receiving more than 1,000 applications per position.
Struggling with recruiting? You're not alone. We are all struggling to attract qualified applicants for our jobs. A simple solution to these challenges sounds appealing, right? In theory, the solution is always to spend more money. Whether that's. Increasing your budget for job boards, increasing the size of your recruiting team, or increasing your employee's compensation.

Recruiting metrics are an essential part of any data-driven hiring strategy. And yet, the number of metrics and data points that recruiters could measure seems endless. There is so much angst about random candidate behaviour right now. ‘Erratic, mind-changing, counteroffers, ghosting.’ The response from most recruiters has been predictable. Change nothing – yet hope for candidates to change. Good luck with that plan. If ever we needed proof that recruiting requires a dynamic, evolving skill set, Covid provided that.
Ask any recruiter why they got into the field, and they aren’t going to tell you about being swept off their feet with a particular HR tech solution—they’re going to tell you about changing someone’s life with a job offer, or building. Arya - Recruiting AI Technology. Building a diverse team: how do you start? Diversity breeds diversity. This was a point of discussion recently during our webinar on increasing the diversity of our candidate pipelines – Recruiting strategies to attract a more diverse candidate pipeline. During the Q&A session, one of our attendees asked a very poignant question: “If diversity attracts diversity, and we lost our diverse members, how do we start again?”.
During the London 2012 Olympics Usain Bolt set a new event record. Streaking by the competition in a staggering 9.63 seconds, Bolt solidified his position as the fastest man on the planet. It would make sense then, during the 4 x 100m relay, with three teammates who are all statistically slower than Usain, that their overall time would reflect this, right?
Candidate shortages, huh? We have got to find more candidates! Well, yes, but also, no. How about we start by managing the client and the job order? A much misunderstood and poorly handled recruiter skill is the high art of taking a qualified job order. No job order was ever filled by a candidate […]. Thousands of green ‘newbie‘ recruiters have joined the industry in 2021. Many more will follow next year as the industry booms. (And it will). But looming in the background is the fact that 50% of rookies don’t last six months. 80% won’t make it as a career. So it is not a surprise that every […]. Often people outside recruitment like to mock the industry. Usually deeply ill-informed, it’s still not fun to be on the receiving end. However, there is a widespread phrase used by many inside recruitment, which undermines everything we do. It’s a throwaway line. Breezy and easy and, on the surface not offensive, or even controversial. I […].
Modern Australia was built on immigrants. They came in clearly defined waves. The British and Irish. The Southern Europeans. The Asians. Many other countries are the same, and most pay homage to those immigrants now. I am an immigrant myself, arriving in Australia two weeks before my 21st Birthday. I am the son of an […]. We are back in lockdown down here in Sydney. So more time watching TV than usual. Got me thinking. There are movies about recruitment, or at least […].
This may not be a comfortable read. Almost all recruiters tell themselves huge lies. I did it when I was a recruiter, and I did it when I was manager too. I do it now when things go off track. But I stop myself fast. It’s a human trait on a broader level for sure, […]. The post The Savage Truth first appeared on Greg Savage.
I remember it vividly. It was the darkest hour of the Covid-apocalypse in Australia. Mid 2020. Collapsing revenue. Staff losses. Lockdowns. WFH. WTF! However, more than 1,000 temps and a robust consulting team with deep relationships, combined with intelligent and swift cost-reduction, kept the business […].

It is tough times for locked-down recruiters across Australia and NZ. Plenty of recruiters across the world are burned and bruised by the past 18 months. STAY STRONG!
